NPP-SOL at HIDROGEODÍA 2025 in Zaragoza: Nature-Based Solutions and the Experimental Wetland in the Lerma Basin

On Saturday, March 22nd, in celebration of World Water Day, HIDROGEODÍA 2025 took place with great success in Zaragoza. This nationwide initiative, promoted by the Spanish Group of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (AIH-GE), featured a series of educational activities held in various provinces across Spain.

In Zaragoza, the event was guided by Albert Soler Gil, Manuela Barbieri, and Rosanna Margalef Martí from the University of Barcelona which is Partner of NPP-SOL Project, along with Jesús Causapé and Eduardo Garrido from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME-CSIC).

More than 50 participants of all ages enthusiastically took part in the organized activities.

The event began with a visit to the Aquagraria Museum in Ejea de los Caballeros, home to a fascinating collection of historic agricultural machinery. In the afternoon, attendees visited the Lerma Basin, where they explored an artificial wetland designed to treat nitrate-contaminated agricultural runoff. This experimental site serves as a practical example of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and resilience in agricultural landscapes.

The focus was placed on the importance of NBS in water treatment and sustainable water resource management, highlighting how these solutions can contribute to mitigating the environmental impact of agriculture. The experimental wetland in the Lerma Basin demonstrates concretely how NBS can be implemented to improve water quality and support biodiversity.
