Back from an inspiring few days (13-17 September) at IWA Conference on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control (ICWS 2026) in Chania, Greece!
Helena Escalona-Orellana and Rosanna Margalef Martí, representing the University of Barcelona / MAiMA Research Group, had the opportunity to present two research contributions:
- “Denitrification Stimulation Improves Agricultural Runoff Water Treatment in a Constructed Wetland as Revealed by Isotopic Analysis: comparison between two electron-donors”
- “Isotopic assessment of nitrate removal in constructed wetlands: comparison between continuous and intermittent flow operation under whey-mediated biostimulation”
Both studies are part of the research carried out within the framework of the NPP-SOL project -part of the PRIMA Programme supported by the European Union – which aims at preventing surface and groundwater bodies from agricultural nonpoint source pollution under Mediterranean conditions using modelling and technological tools.
Beyond presenting the research work, it was a great opportunity to exchange ideas with researchers and professionals from different backgrounds, learn about the latest advances in wetland systems and nature-based solutions, and discuss new perspectives for future research.
Many thanks to the organizers and to everyone who made ICWS 2026 such an inspiring and enjoyable experience!
