A new open-access review by the Moroccan partners of the NPP-SOL project was published on 13 March 2026 in the journal Environments. Authored by researchers from Mohammed V University in Rabat and the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA), together with University Chouaib Doukkali, the article is titled “Integrated Bioreactor and Wetland-Based Approaches for Agricultural Drainage Treatment: A Comprehensive Review of Design, Performance, and Field Applications“.
Agricultural drainage water carries a broad range of pollutants, including nitrates, ammonium, organic matter, phosphorus and emerging substances, and poses a concern for both the environment and human health. The review brings together existing knowledge on two families of treatment systems: bioreactors, and natural and constructed wetlands.
For bioreactors, it covers their categories, working principles and treatment efficiency. Constructed wetlands are critically evaluated as passive treatment systems and as providers of nature-based services. The authors also discuss open issues for bioreactors, such as the durability of the filling media, greenhouse gas production and the removal of emerging pollutants, and propose ways to combine bioreactors with nature-based treatment systems.
This work was carried out within the framework of NPP-SOL, part of the PRIMA Programme supported by the European Union.
