University of Cagliari (UNICA) – Italy
The University of Cagliari (UNICA) is a public state University with about 25,000 students and over 2,000 teaching and technical administrative staff.
It is located in the island of Sardinia-Italy, in the middle of the Mediterranean. Given its geographic location, it has consolidated relationships and exchanges with the southern Mediterranean countries, at both students and staff levels.
An international mix of students coming from foreign HEIs (400 this year) enriches the local community of students. Thanks to more than 1000 partnership agreements, UNICA’s students have various opportunities to study abroad. Besides that, about more than 100 visiting professors come to Cagliari’s University yearly.
UNICA offers structures and integrated study plans, training activities closely tied to labor market and research, to increase international competitiveness.
The Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences (DSCG-UNICA) was established in 2012, combining Geological and Chemical skills. The mission of the DSCG-UNICA is to advance knowledge on land management and perform researches both basic and applied. The Department has 13 full professors, 31 associate professors and 25 researchers. Research in the Department is highly cooperative and international.
University of Barcelona (UB) – Spain
The Universitat de Barcelona (UB), founded in 1450, is a public university devoted to higher education and research, engaging with society and actively promoting knowledge transfer. The UB boasts of a large and growing community of almost 6.200 teachers and researchers, and 2.400 administrative staff, and offers teaching to more than 76.000 students each year. UB is ranked as the 1st Spanish university in the World University Ranking 2024 and 134 worldwide, managing in average 150 European projects per year. UB is currently the only Spanish university that is a member of the prestigious League of European Research Universities (LERU), is granted since 2015 by the European Commission with the “HR (Human Resources) Excellence in Research Award”, and coordinates the CHARM-EU, one of the first university alliances aimed at creating a new European university model.
Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Montpellier
(CIHEAM-IAMM) – France
CIHEAM Montpellier, also known as the Montpellier International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, is one of the four institutes of CIHEAM (Centre International de Hautes Études Agronomiques Méditerranéennes).
Founded in 1962, this institute specialises in training, research and cooperation in the fields of agriculture, food and sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. It offers master’s and doctorate programmes, organises continuing education courses, and conducts applied research projects in collaboration with partner institutions in various countries. Its main objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas and to improving the living conditions of Mediterranean populations through capacity building and knowledge transfer.
Agricultural Research Organization – Volcani Institute (ARO) – Israel
Located at the Volcani Center campus in Bet-Dagan, near Tel-Aviv, ARO’s six institutes are responsible for Plant Sciences, Animal Science, Plant Protection, Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, and Postharvest and Food Sciences. ARO also operates four research stations, in various parts of the country, and serves as a testing center for agricultural produce and equipment. Israel’s Gene Bank for Agricultural Crops is also located on the ARO Volcani Center campus. While encompassing the full range of agricultural research activities, ARO focuses in particular on arid zone agriculture, enabling Israel – a country short of all the resources required for agriculture – to achieve among the highest levels of agricultural output in the world.
Technion – Israel Institute of Technology – Israel
The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in structural engineering, construction management, transportation engineering, water resources, and environmental engineering. It features cutting-edge research in sustainable infrastructure, smart cities, and environmental protection. With highly qualified faculty, modern facilities, and strong industry connections, the faculty prepares students for successful careers in diverse sectors. It emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and global impact, aiming to educate engineers who are technically proficient and socially and environmentally conscious.
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MOAG) – Israel
The Israel Soil Erosion Research Station is the R&D department of the Israel Natural Resource Management division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. It focuses on studying soil erosion’s impact on agriculture and the environment. Located in Israel, it conducts field experiments to understand erosion processes and evaluate land management techniques like contour farming and cover cropping. The station develops strategies to minimize soil loss and provides education to farmers on sustainable practices. It collaborates with universities and government agencies to share knowledge and inform policy-making related to soil conservation. The station’s research contributes to enhancing soil health, improving agricultural resilience, and protecting water quality from sedimentation and pollution.
